Natural Deodorant Review: Tom’s of Maine
If you are new to my blog, I’ll start by sharing a little bit about how my journey into natural skincare products came about. For me, it all originally started with food. I spent my 20s feeling really sick, lethargic and spending my free time in and out of doctor’s offices to no avail. It wasn’t until I adopted a Paleo diet and started eating whole, real foods that I regained my health at 29.
From there, I started to notice toxins entering my body and my household through cleaning products and skincare products. It has been a slow transition, but through the years, I have been learning about more natural alternatives and switching out products as I learn about them.
Our skin is our largest organ and the toxic chemicals applied to it can be easily absorbed into our bodies through the skin. Over time, these toxic chemicals can impact our health.
One of the products many of us have a hard time giving up is a conventional deodorant. I often hear people say that they tried natural deodorant once and it just didn’t work for them. I thought this way too. For a long time, I was convinced that natural deodorants just didn’t work for me.
Switching to a natural deodorant
I later realized that I didn’t give my body enough time to transition. When trying a natural personal care product for the first time, it’s important to give your body the proper time to adjust.
If your body is used to a conventional product, you might need a little time to adjust to a natural formula free of chemicals and artificial ingredients. Trying the deodorant for at least 3-7 days, including testing out different scents (or unscented), can help determine the best fit for your body’s unique chemistry.
It originally took me about 1 month to switch from a conventional antiperspirant to a natural deodorant. I probably wasn’t too pleasant to be around in that time frame. 😉
In the end, I am so thankful that I made the switch and I am no longer bombarding my body with chemicals. My body feels more balanced now and I adapt to natural brands much more smoothly.
Why natural deodorant?
No one wants sweaty armpits. And I totally get that! This is a reason why many of us avoid natural deodorants. However, we shouldn’t disregard the concerns about some of the ingredients found in conventional products. Every day we apply deodorant to an area of our body where our lymph nodes lie close to the surface of our skin. Although conventional products are effective, it is really worth seeking out natural alternatives that work for you.
I recently had a chance to try out a safe, natural aluminum-free product from Tom’s of Maine. It was the Long Lasting Natural Deodorant. I really liked both the unscented and wild lavender products.
- Tom’s of Maine natural deodorant has no aluminum, no petrochemicals, no parabens and no artificial fragrances or preservatives
- Clinically proven, 24-hour odor protection using odor-fighting hops and odor-trapping zinc
- Fully recyclable packaging through local municipalities or the TerraCycle Tom’s of Maine Natural Care Brigade
- No animal testing and no animal ingredients
- 10% of Tom’s of Maine profits go back to helping people and the planet.
Please note that this is a deodorant (anti-odor), not an antiperspirant (anti-sweat), thus it does not protect against wetness and does not include aluminum as an active ingredient. If you perspire a lot, you may need to seek out a different alternative, depending on your day’s activities.
