It’s the middle of September, and even though the heat is still here in Los Angeles, pumpkin-spiced everything is back in full force! And though the commercialism of it all can get on my nerves, I have to say that I am really grateful for the hyped-up fall displays, decorations, and foods. Fall has always been my very favorite time of year, and all of these things make it feel like Autumn really is on its way, even though I’m still wearing a tank top!
One of the best things Autumn has going for it, in my opinion, is its smells.
You know the glorious scents I am talking about: all of the soaps, candles, and air fresheners that make your home smell like baked apple pie or cinnamon rolls without breaking your Paleo meal plan! But alas, so many of these products are laced with synthetic fragrances and toxins. What to do, what to do? I’m sure you know by now what my answer to that question is: create your own natural products!

Make Your Poop Smell Like Pumpkin Spice using Essential Oils!
First off, I’d like to apologize for using the word poop. It is one of my all-time least favorite words, but as a mom of two toddlers, somehow it has become a more commonly used part of my vocabulary than I’d like to admit! And today I am going to use the word for a great reason! You see, this recipe will actually help you to annihilate smells you don’t want hanging around your home (namely the “someone just pooped” smell), as well as providing the comforting scents of fall that we all know and love. And I’m sure you’d agree that it’s better to talk about poop than to smell it, so here we go!

How this Spray Works to Rid of Poop Smells
The concept behind this and similar toilet sprays (which are all inspired by Poop Pouri spray that you can purchase) is that you can actually eliminate poop smells by spraying the solution into the toilet before you do a number 2. The spray creates a film on top of the toilet water that traps your poop and its gnarly smells underneath. So, in theory, by the time that you stand up and flush, any signs of bad smells should be “drowned” out and then flushed out of your life forever. This philosophy really works so much better (and safer) than trying to mask bad smells with over-powering air fresheners!
Most of the DIY recipes that I have found online include some variation of essential oils, alcohol, water, and sometimes glycerin or soap. (Does that list kinda remind you of the DIY Hair Perfume we made together a few months back? Be sure to make some of that, too, while you have your ingredients out!)
I have played around with different quantities and essential oils over time, but the basic/core ingredients work well. Here’s what they do:
- Essential Oils – Provide fragrance, but more importantly are needed to create the oil barrier on the top of the toilet water. In all honesty, these could probably be replaced with plain cooking or skincare oil for the same “poop-trapping” effect, but since essential oils are also known for their amazing scents and cleansing properties, they have remained an integral part of the recipe I use at home.
- Distilled Water – Dilutes the oils to appropriate concentration
- Rubbing alcohol – Helps to emulsify or “blend” the oils and water together
- Optional: Vegetable Glycerin or Castile Soap – Help to thicken the film or barrier and may also help emulsify the oils and water together. I’d recommend using them very lightly though, if at all.
Alright friends, let’s get making!
DIY Autumn Spice Toilet Spray
70 drops Essential Oils of choice; for the best Autumn Spice scent I use:
- 20 Drops Cinnamon Essential Oil
- 15 Drops Nutmeg Essential Oil
- 15 Drops Clove Essential Oil
- 12 Drops Cardamom Essential Oil
- 8 Drops Sweet Orange Essential Oil
1.5 Tbsp Rubbing Alcohol
4 oz Distilled Water
Optional: 1 tsp Vegetable Glycerin or Liquid Castile Soap
You’ll also want a 4 oz Amber Glass Bottle with Spritz lid, a funnel, and our free printable label.
Method:
- Using the funnel as needed, pour essential oils and rubbing alcohol into your amber glass bottle. Swirl the bottle a few times to combine.
- Add glycerin or soap, if using, and swirl bottle again several times.
- Add distilled water and screw the lid onto the bottle. Shake well to incorporate.
- Print out our free label and paste it on.
To Use:
(Guests will love the instructions on our free printable label!) Simply shake the bottle a couple of times to ensure the solution is well mixed, spray 10(ish) good spritzes into the toilet bowl, and then do your business as normal!
