Did you used to use oil-free everything? I’ve always had oilier skin and for years and years, I only sought out oil-free products. Not to gross you out, but after slathering my face with all the oil-free products, I would still wake up with a thick layer of oil on my face. I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong, until about 5 years ago, when I asked my good friend, Natalie of Honey, Ghee & Me for some skin care advice.

Scared to put oil on your face? You shouldn’t be! And here’s why…
If you’re anything like me, you grew up thinking skin + oil = breakouts. Maybe you even wiped your face at night with drying pads to make sure you got every single little smidgen of oil off of your skin before you went to bed… I did. Yet still, my skin broke out…
Turns out I was doing it all wrong. Most of us were. Just like the 90’s brought the fat-is-bad fad, it also gave us the oil-is-scary era. In retrospect, seems the 90’s offered little when it came to physical wellness. But fast-forward to the 2010’s and here we are, happily scarfing fats and smothering oils on our faces. It’s time for skin redemption!
If there’s one thing you can do to make your skin happier, it’s adding a healthy oil to it every day.
Your skin needs oil. In fact, it needs oil so much that it creates it! The sebaceous glands secrete an oily substance called sebum, which lubricates our skin and hair to help protect it. It waterproofs skin and prevents it from drying out, as well as shielding it from foreign microorganisms. Sebum heals, nourishes, and guards our skin.
Despite popular belief, this oil does not cause skin problems—it’s circumstantial factors such as hormones, bacteria, and dead skin cells clogging pores that lead to most problems actually. This oil is something we need—don’t fight it, embrace it!
Here’s the deal: people often assume that if their skin is oily, they need to dry it. Remember those pads I was talking about above? Put those bad boys down. Dry you will not!

Your skin produces excess oil to overcompensate for being dry… thus making it appear and feel oily.
- If you add oil to your skin, however, it will balance out, and stop having to produce all those extra oils on its own.
- When your skin doesn’t have enough oil, it becomes vulnerable to agitation and funk—remember, sebum
protects it!
