How to Support Thyroid Function with Gentle Detox

HOW TO SUPPORT THYROID FUNCTION WITH GENTLE DETOX

HOW TO SUPPORT THYROID FUNCTION WITH GENTLE DETOX

Have you been listening to the Thyroid Sessions? This may be one of the most informative online conferences I’ve listened to. Sean Croxton of Underground Wellness interviewed 24 of the world’s leading experts in thyroid health to help us understand this epidemic holistically and treat it naturally whenever possible.  And yes, it is an epidemic! According to thyroid.org more than 12 percent of the U.S. population will develop a thyroid condition during their lifetime.

I’ve only had a chance to catch one session a day, but each one I’ve listened to has knocked my socks off. And based on the Facebook comments and emails that I am getting from you guys, it seems that you also agree! I actually just purchased the summit myself today. After listening to a few sessions, I knew that I had to listen to the rest. There is so much to learn and SO many people to help with this information. I myself, struggled with undiagnosed thyroid issues for a long time and it’s a conversation that I have with friends and clients regularly.

There is only a couple of days left to take advantage of the event week special pricing. Click here to get lifetime access to the Thyroid Sessions and listen to the talks anytime, anywhere!

Earlier this week, I caught a great talk with Andrea Nakayama about the important role a healthy gut plays in having healthy thyroid function. One thing she talked about was the role of healthy liver function in thyroid health.

The thyroid hormone T4 is converted to T3 and reverse T3. We want to make sure we are getting enough T3 and reverse T3 (rT3) and in the optimal ratios. Things like stress, radiation, fluoride, and toxins could effect this and cause us to make too much reverse T3. Even if you are making enough T4, due to the toxins in your body, your conversion might go too much in the wrong way and not leave your body much T3 to use.

Our bodies are smart and should be able to deal with a little bit of toxins, however in today’s environment, most of us are overloaded with toxins. Most of the toxins that we get and most of the stress on the liver comes from the gut.

First steps to preventing these hormones from going astray and reducing toxins in our bodies include:

  • Reduce stress
  • Get lots of high quality sleep
  • Reduce toxins in your environment (i.e. cleaning supplies, beauty products, etc.)
  • Reduce toxins in your food (choose organic and unprocessed foods)
  • Remove or greatly reduce inflammatory foods from your diet
  • Use water filters
After lifestyle changes have been made and inflammatory foods have been removed, to help reduce the toxin load on our bodies, we can also support digestive function by supporting liver function with gentle detoxes using whole foods! Certain foods help boost liver detox pathways.

I have been using this turmeric and green tea to gently detox. I’ve also been having it as my pre-workout meal. It’s a great way to start the day. The caffeine from the green tea, gives me a little energy boost before my workout and the coconut milk helps me stay full until I am done, plus all of the added benefits from the rest of the ingredients. This tea tastes like a light curry with the combination of coconut milk, ginger and turmeric, which I don’t mind, as curry is one of my favorite foods! Let’s take a quick look at the individual ingredients.

HOW TO SUPPORT THYROID FUNCTION WITH GENTLE DETOX

Green tea

Chemicals in green tea including, catechins, can increase detoxification enzymes in humans and promote proper liver function (source).

Fresh Turmeric

Turmeric has long been used as a potent anti-inflammatory. Some studies have also shown that turmeric may increase detoxification and improve liver function.

Fresh Ginger

Ginger has been known to relax and soothe the intestinal tract. Scientific research has also revealed that ginger possesses properties with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Lemon Essential Oil

Lemons are thought to boost the liver’s efficiency. According to Nicole Cutler L.Ac., “Lemons contain high amounts of Vitamin C, an antioxidant that is needed to manufacture glutathione. Because glutathione is used to neutralize toxins, lemons help the liver with detoxification”. (source). I only recommend ingesting therapeutic grade oils. If you don’t have access to any, you can substitute fresh grated lemon zest in the recipe.

Coconut Milk

The healthy and beneficial fats in the coconut milk will help you absorb more nutrients from the tea.

Detox Tea

I like to blend this tea to make sure all of the ingredients are well incorporated. I use this to make smoothies and blended tea/coffee drinks. Truthfully, I am obsessed with it…it works so well and it’s really easy to clean. But, a regular blender will do too!

Detox Tea: Turmeric Ginger Green Tea

Ingredients
1 heaping teaspoon of green tea or 1 tea bag (find organic green tea here and tea infuser here)
1.5 teaspoons fresh turmeric, grated
1/2 to 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
1 to 2 drops of lemon essential oil (find therepautic grade essential oils here)
1/4 cup coconut milk (find BPA and additive free coconut milk here)
1 teaspoon raw honey (or more to taste)

  1. Pour hot water into a mug, add a tea bag or your loose tea in a tea infuser. Also add the turmeric, ginger and honey and let it steep for about 7 minutes.
  2. Remove the tea bag or tea infuser.
  3. Add the lemon oil and coconut milk and give the tea a quick whirl in a blender.
  4. Serve and enjoy!

I recommend also adding some black pepper; it boosts the bioavailability of the curcumin!
