We can argue all day about if alcohol is Paleo or not. But, let’s not… instead, let’s sit back, relax and say cheers! You can raise a non-alcoholic beverage too. 😉 . As a health coach, I get the question is alcohol Paleo VERY often. My answer really varies depending on the person, their goals and health conditions. I personally think there is room for alcohol in some people’s Paleo diets. It just depends on your goals and how it makes you feel.
I don’t drink often, but I love a happy hour with the girls or a glass of wine to celebrate the weekend with the hubby. My cocktail of choice is usually a fresh made margarita with high quality tequila. It’s refreshing and it doesn’t leave me feeling “ugh” the next day. My gal pal, Natalie of Honey, Ghee & Me introduced me to the Moscow Mule awhile back and oh my! I was in love immediately.
The Moscow Mule is a combination of ginger beer and vodka. It is refreshing and easy to make. It is usually served in a copper cup, which for some reason makes the drink that much more fun.
So, when my publisher sent me a copy of The Best Craft Cocktails & Bartending with Flair: An Incredible Collection of Extraordinary Drinks by master mixologist, Jeremy LeBlanc, I knew right away that the first drink I was trying was his Mon Cheri Moscow Mule. We actually made this when we took our little vacation to the river earlier this summer. We loved his addition of cherries to this perfect summer cocktail.
As far as the gluten content of alcohol goes, some say that if it is distilled, it shouldn’t have any gluten left. I am personally REALLY sensitive to gluten, so I feel much better when I stick with non-grain based alcohols. For vodka, I usually go with Ciroc vodka because it is made from grapes. The authors of this book recommend Tito’s Vodka, which is made from corn. We made this recipe with Ciroc and it was dee-lish!
This entire book is filled with hand-crafted and delicious cocktail recipes, using whole food ingredients. Mixology is all the rage now. It is definitely fun to go out for interesting cocktails. With this book in hand, you can impress and entertain friends with style and ease!

If you will be attending the Ancestral Health Symposium, come say hi! I will be at the Page Street Publishing (my publisher) table some of the time, selling and signing copies of my book. You can also grab a copy of this gorgeous craft cocktail book there!
Paleo Mon Cheri Moscow Mule Recipe
Not your typical sweet Moscow Mule. Rich cherries and acrid ginger are muddled and instantly infused into the vodka. Topping with the carbonated ginger beer brings a bite to every sip.
YIELDS 1 COCKTAIL
Optional: Serve in copper mugs like these
Ingredients
2 thin slices of ginger, plus 1 for garnish
3 cherries, plus 1 or 2 for garnish
2 dashes aromatic bitters
2 oz/60 ml vodka (I used Ciroc)
¼ oz/7 ml freshly squeezed lime juice, plus wheel of lime for garnish
3 oz/90 ml ginger beer (look for a high quality brand with no additives, food coloring, flavors, or preservatives)
Ice
- In a dry Tin Play shaker, muddle two slices of ginger with cherries, bitters and vodka. You’ll know you’ve muddled appropriately when ginger fills the nostril.
- Strain and pour into a well-chilled copper mug half full of ice.
- Squeeze lime juice and top with ginger beer.
- Garnish with a lime wheel, cherries and ginger.
