Treat yo’ self. That’s a thing, right? This Homemade Vanilla Coffee Bean Body Scrub is seriously all about treating yo’ self. If this Vanilla Coffee Bean Body Scrub was edible, I would be all up in it. It really makes a beautiful gift, too.
The combination of fresh ground coffee, vanilla, and almond makes this body scrub smell good enough to pour on ice cream, or just dig into with a spoon (although, I wouldn’t recommend it). Aside from making your bathroom smell like a dream, it exfoliates the skin, leaving it looking radiant and incredibly moisturized.
Exfoliation
Exfoliating the skin on a weekly basis is one of my top beauty and health secrets. The very process of exfoliation brings moisture to the skin by helping new cells transition to the surface, and with them lipids and moisture. Exfoliating also lifts dead skin cells from the surface of the skin and opens up the pores, allowing the skin to breathe. It even aids in the movement of lymphatic fluid (think: a circulatory system for cellular metabolic waste).
This body scrub incorporates an exfoliation trifecta of fresh ground coffee beans, coconut sugar, and Epsom salts.
Coffee Beans | The caffeine found in the coffee beans has a revitalizing effect on the skin by improving circulation. The hot water from your shower opens up pores and will help the caffeine absorb into your skin, so try to let the scrub soak in for a few minutes during your shower.
Coconut Sugar | Many body scrubs only use Epsom or sea salt to exfoliate, which can be very drying to the skin. The coconut sugar we use in this recipe draws water into the skin, and helps to replenish lost moisture.
Epsom Salt | If you’re wondering why we included Epsom salt in this recipe if it drys the skin, note that Epsom salt is incredibly beneficial for a myriad of reasons. When Epsom salt is absorbed into the skin through warm water, it increases the level of magnesium in the body. Magnesium is an essential mineral that’s involved in over 300 chemical reactions in the body. Magnesium relaxes tense muscles, and also helps to boost your mood by increasing serotonin levels in the brain.
Vanilla Coffee Bean Body Scrub
3/4 cup coconut oil + almond oil (I used 1/2 cup coconut + 1/4 almond) (find raw, organic coconut oil in bulk here and find almond oil here)
1/4 cup vegetable glycerin (find it here)
1/2 cup coconut sugar (find it here)
1/2 cup coffee grinds
1-1 ½ cup Epsom salts (the amount needed will depend on the Epsom salt you use) (find them here)
1 teaspoon almond extract (find it here)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (find organic and gluten-free here)
- Melt coconut oil over the stove top and combine with almond oil.
- Whisk in the vegetable glycerin.
- Stir in the coconut sugar, coffee grinds, and 1 cup Epsom salt. Continue adding Epsom salt ¼ cup at a time until the consistency is thick, and doesn’t looks separated from the oil.
- Mix in almond extract and vanilla extract for fragrance.
- Store in a sealed mason jar. When using, rub in a circular motion on the skin in a warm shower to enjoy the benefits listed above.
